Desktop video conferencing using Polycom PVX is a popular choice among K-20 users. How can you get started with desktop video conferencing? The links on this page will lead to documentation and resources to help you download PVX and learn about PVX PC and webcam requirements. You can also learn to install, configure, and get the most out of your desktop video conferencing software. (Although several different software applications are available for video conferencing on PCs and Macs, this page currently focuses only on PVX implementations. This may change as K-20 user needs evolve.) The most recent releases of PVX can be found along with setup and support documentation on the Polycom website. (Note: PVX 8.0.4 has been used successfully on some Windows XP systems, but Polycom recommends it for Vista and dual-core processors. Polycom also has used the term "limited, supported release" to describe PVX 8.0.4. If PVX 8.0.2 is currently meeting your requirements, you do not need to upgrade to 8.0.4.) The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges has created installation and configuration instructions for PVX users in the CTC sector. Your setup and configuration requirements may vary slightly, but the document can be downloaded here for educational and reference purposes. (Note: You may need to download and install the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to view this document in your web browser.) Polycom provides an online PVX tutorial for those who are new to video conferencing and/or the PVX product. Additional tips and ideas from K-20 desktop video users can be found in this document. This information will be updated and improved as knowledge of desktop video setup, configuration, and usage continues to grow throughout the K-20 community. K-12 users who wish to obtain more information about video conferencing and PVX are encouraged to contact their regional Video ITUs. A list of the VITUs for K-12 institutions can be found here. |
